Free Mouthguards for Kids

Kids today are very actively involved in all kinds of sports. Basketball, hockey, tai kwan do, bicycling, football, inline skating to mention just a few. All these sports involve contact with objects that can do harm to the teeth.

Mouthguards are very important to prevent injury to the teeth and gums but they are not the standard in many kids' sports for only ONE reason. The reason is that store-bought boil 'n bite mouthguards don't fit very well, so kids have to keep their teeth together to keep them in their mouths. In football that's OK because players have a chance to breathe well between downs, but in basketball and many other sports you just cannot keep running or biking with your teeth together -- you need to breathe through an open mouth. This is precisely why mouthguards are not worn for all sports in which contact might occur, even though they should be.

The normal cost for a sports guard nationwide is somewhere between $150 and $300. At North Georgia Smiles we realize that typical families can't be buying 2-3 of these per year for each child in the family…..SO……as a community service to our patients and to give back to the community, we've decided to get all the equipment ourselves and make them at no charge for the kids in our practice.

If you have a child who participates in any sport, call and make an appointment for a custom designed mouthguard with our compliments.

DON'T LET HIM LOSE HIS SMILE!

From the American Dental Association

Anyone who participates in a sport that carries a significant risk of injury should wear a mouth protector. This includes a wide range of sports like football, hockey, basketball, baseball, gymnastics, and volleyball.

Mouth protectors, which typically cover the upper teeth, can cushion a blow to the face, minimizing the risk of broken teeth and injuries to the soft tissues of the mouth. If you wear braces or another fixed dental appliance on your lower jaw, your dentist may suggest a mouth protector for these teeth as well.

Accidents can happen during any physical activity. A mouth protector can help cushion a blow to the face that otherwise might result in an injury to the mouth. A misdirected elbow in a one-on-one basketball game or a spill off a bicycle can leave you with chipped or broken teeth, nerve damage to a tooth or even tooth loss. A mouth protector can limit the risk of such injuries as well as protect the soft tissues of your tongue, lips and cheek lining.

A properly fitted mouth protector will stay in place while you are wearing it, making it easy for you to talk and breathe.
