Mercury-Free

While the final decision as to whether or not the mercury in dental amalgams is harmful to the patient has not been determined, Dr. Gibree has made the decision not to use the material in his patients. His decision is based on several reasons:

  • Dr. Gibree says " I won't place them in my family's teeth and won't use them in my own so I won't place them in teeth of patients who entrust their health to me."
  • Dental amalgams are unattractive.
  • Dental amalgam tends to expand and has a propensity to split teeth. Today's composite materials not only look better but they bond to teeth and prevent breakage.

Dental Amalgam

Dental amalgam is made up of about 50% silver alloy powder and 50% liquid mercury. These materials are combined to produce the amalgam that has been used to fill cavities for years. As you know, mercury is a poison and its use has been regulated both by OSHA and the EPA.
